Nerding has some advantages
Aug 30th, 2006 by Peter
Since I recently left the biggest gaming community in Denmark to prioritize my wife and “normal” life, I have enjoyed letting completely go of the urge to check up on counter-strike related stuff. I still hang around since it is hard to let completely go on something my friend and I started almost 3 years ago. Even though he was the mastermind and visionary, I did my share with ideas, input and a good portion of hard nerd work.
It is hard to let go, but now I find myself forgetting to check up, and don’t visit as frequently as earlier. I do it in my own pace with no guilt if I should miss a few days of news. A little sad, but also a relief since I now have more free time for my wife and maintaining this blog.
To clarify what I actually did in my more active days here is a list of things I did with a team of other geeks on a daily basis:
– Reading news on counter-strike related sites
– Checking up on the www.slap.dk homepage for news
– Vacuuming the forum for technical problems I could give some input to
– Reading and acting in forum threads that needed it
– Being as available as possible on #slap.dk on the IRC network
– Answering mails with all kinds of questions regarding the tournament
– Giving final “says” in the more difficult cases
– Sending “goodbye” mails to people who cheat, or misbehave
– Playing the game to keep myself up-to-date
Some to more degree than others and probably did more stuff. But who remembers anymore.
I thought this was final, but a few days ago my old friend called me to ask a favour: “Are you ready to make reviews of new hardware/nerd stuff for the old community?”.
I hesitated at first, but then thought about it. The thought was appealing, but there had to be a carrot. So I told him that I would accept but with one demand. I wanted a clause to say yes and no to what reviews I wrote. No problemo and the deal were set.
So now I have a tiny side job making reviews of new stuff when I have the time. Fortunately there are not that many reviews and it won’t become a burden. And should it be, I can always say “no thanks”. Damn, I got it made. After a review I can even keep the goods sometimes. Just like the job I finished yesterday reviewing a brand new gaming mouse mat. Great deal for me since the mat will cost about 300dkr (about 45 US$) when it is available in retail. I look forward to seeing the finished article when it is uploaded soon.
I guess I should start signing my name as “Peter – Freelance Nerd Stuff Reviewer“. That will sure attract the chicks, right?
