Now I know what the hype is all about

C hates them, as they accordingly to her, are too sweet, oily and heavy. Distance makes them too difficult for me to taste (intrigued yet?).
Moon cakes – I’ve read about them, and I’ve heard about them. All Chinese love to give these away, but apparently very few find them tasty. It’s a big tradition to give these to friends, relatives and colleagues during the annual Chinese Moon Festival.
I always wondered what the fuzz was all about. I’m not known for passing down an offer for cake, and I’ve always had a hunch that I would like moon cake.
A few days ago I finally had the chance. One of C’s schoolmates, who is also Chinese, brought 3 moon cakes for us during a visit back home. I love them. I can understand why some people find them too sweet or too heavy, but other than that, they are very close to being like a Mazarin Cake you can buy here in Denmark too. Marzipan Cake is primarily made of marcipan (which is made from almonds and sucker). C even munched one herself, and I am sure she enjoyed it. Maybe it reminded her of back home and she must have forgot that she really don’t like it. She was watching a Chinese soap, which normally means that all contact is impossible, and I guess her taste buds were non-functioning meanwhile as well.
We left one “alive” as a present for my parents. Close call though, as I could have eaten that one too – no problemo. So luckily it was there for the photographer:
One of the most important things about moon cake, is the packaging. The appearance of a gift is everything in China.
The cakes are not that big. About 8 x 8cm (about 2,5 inches). Somehow I always expected them to be bigger. My excuse is that I have lived in pastry country nr. 1 all my life.
I wanna taste the cake … Next time I visit – I WANT MOONCAKE :-)
Sorry dude, but I ate ’em ALL!. Only one left for my parents, and you’re not getting that one!
Hi! I was wondering because i love Marcipan from Denmark, if i can buy that kind of marcipan here in Vancouver BC Canada.
Or when are you coming here in Vancouver :-)
thanks for the info :-)
Hi Angie,
No idea if you can get those in Vancouver to be honest.
The more known quality brands are Anton Berg and Odense Marcipan. If you google those, you may be able to buy them online?
